Tired of Your Decor? Try One of These Trending Paint Techniques

For many, nothing compares to the open and clean feeling created by painting with shades of white, beige or gray throughout your home. This neutral design trend in interior paint, however, is getting an infusion of creativity at the moment. From faux finishes to painted ceilings, try one of these paint trends to bring vitality and a fashion-forward sense to your home.

Go green. Choose from an array of complex shades of green to add ambience and mood to a room—from deep forest hues to variations of olive and sage.

Add contrast. Add instant interest to your interior design by painting trim in a contrasting color. Use a different and/or darker shade of white for crown molding and baseboards, for example. Or go a little bolder by painting window frames in a striking shade of black. The options are limitless and easy enough to change should you grow tired of the look you’ve created.

Paint the ceiling. Referred to as the “fifth wall,” ceilings are often overlooked when it comes to creative paint options. You can instantly liven up a room, however, by painting the ceiling a stand-out color, such as sunny yellow or sky blue. This tactic not only adds interest, but can make your room seem bigger, as striking colors encourage the eye to travel upwards.

Think monochrome. You can create a dramatic yet cozy effect when you paint select pieces of furniture and walls the same rich color. Try it with built-in shelves, benches or window-seats as well as standalone furniture placed against a wall, such as bookshelves or cabinets.

Try texture. Unique paint finishes, such as lime wash, are adding depth and interest to walls. Lime wash paint is applied in random, overlapping brush strokes. When the paint dries, the lime creates lighter, mottled areas. Try a deep shade of blue to create a wall that’s reminiscent of a stormy sea or cloudy sky.

Incorporating one of these paint trends into your home is the perfect project for inclement weather days, so visit your local paint store and get creative.
