Pre-Vet Jitters? How to Calm Your Cat Before a Doctor's Visit

Most cats rule the roost at home, taking full advantage of their feline independence. That's why it's understandable that a trip to the vet can be a difficult experience for both cats and their owners. This could be why some 60% of cat owners report not taking their cat to the vet unless they notice a problem. Regular vet visits, however, are an important part of any pet's health.

If your cat struggles with anxiety when heading to the vet, try these tips from nutrition provider Royal Canin.

Use a familiar carrier. A cat carrier is the best way to safely transport your cat to the vet, and can also help your pet feel more secure. However, it's essential to familiarize your cat with the carrier in advance. Keep it out in your living area so that your cat has a chance to check it out and potentially take a snooze or two within it.

Consider pheromones. Try using pheromone spray in your cat's carrier, on their favorite blanket or directly in your car about 30 minutes before leaving for the vet, so that the spray has a chance to dry. Pheromone smells can help keep your kitty calm.

Take some practice runs. Make trips to the vet less anxiety producing by getting your cat used to the car. Take them with you when you do errands around town, adjusting the temperature to a comfortable setting and playing soothing music. Be sure to pack a few of your cat's favorite treats to make the experience even more enjoyable for them.

Schedule wisely. Check with your vet to see which days and hours are generally slower for them, and schedule your cat's appointment accordingly. Avoiding a waiting room that's crowded with other animals and their owners can help keep the experience calming for your cat.

Above all, try your best to stay calm! Cats can pick up on your energy, so be as patient as possible and use a calming voice. This will help make your trip to the vet a better experience for both of you!
