Why Now Is the Time to Prune Your Trees

While the temperatures are still low in many parts of the country, and some still have snow on the ground, now is the perfect time to get out and prune any trees that need a trim.

According to arboricultural experts at professional tree-care firm SavATree, when trees are in dormancy, they are most receptive to pruning, which promotes healthier, stronger growth in the year ahead. In most regions, deciduous trees benefit most from pruning between November and March, while evergreens thrive with late season pruning just before new growth begins.

"Winter pruning generally promotes healthy tree growth and can also reduce risks associated with storm damage and disease," says Mike Tilford, director of general tree care at SavATree. "It's a proactive step every property owner should consider to prepare for the growing season ahead."

Here are five reasons why it makes good sense to prune your trees before spring:

1. You can see better right now. Without foliage obstructing views, structural issues like cracks, fungus or branch malformations are easier to identify and address. This improved visibility ensures clear access for precision pruning.

2. You will improve the overall aesthetic. Thoughtful winter pruning helps shape trees, preparing them for healthy growth and beautiful blooms come spring.

3. You will reduce the risk of storm damage. Pruning removes weak, crossing or rubbing branches, reducing hazards caused by heavy snow and ice during any remaining winter storms.

4. You will get more fruit. If you have fruit trees in your yard, winter pruning is essential. It opens up the canopy, allowing better air circulation and light exposure, which supports even fruit ripening during the growing season.

5. You will help prevent disease. Dormant-season pruning helps prevent the spread of bacterial and fungal diseases, such as blights and cankers, which thrive in warmer months.
