FREDERICK, MD, Apr 19, 2024—Redecorating your kid's room as they age can be a fun, creative time with your child. Or, it can be a total headache and a drain on your bank account. To help, Kim Massett, REALTOR of Real Estate Teams, LLC offers the following insights.
Make it about them. While you my think a nautical or floral theme is darling, remember your child's space is about them, so ask what they would like and then find plausible compromises.
Needs vs. wants. When planning a budget for your room revamp, have your child list out the items they absolutely need (bean bag chair) versus want (lava lamp) and budget accordingly. This is a great opportunity to teach your child about responsible financing.
Consider growth. "While your five-year-old may love dinosaurs now, your future seven-year-old may find them childish," says Massett. If your child has a theme they can’t let go of, consider growth by making themed decor easy to swap, like opting for dino paintings or a funky T-Rex lamp over wall stencils.
Easy to de-clutter. Depending on the habits of your child, keeping their room clean can be a struggle. Lean toward their favor by incorporating lots of storage (think cubbies and tucked away trunks) so items have a rightful home and clearing clutter is a breeze. And it doesn't hurt to consider that adding built-ins now will make for an easy transition to that home-office in 10 years when your kid heads to college.
Go for the big bed. When it comes time to upgrade their bed, you may want to consider getting a double bed instead of a single. "While your 10-year-old fits snug in a single, in five years you may have a six-foot-tall 15-year-old who needs a bigger bed," says Massett. Since double beds aren't typically double the price of a single, you'll save money in the long run.
