FREDERICK, MD, Apr 25, 2024—Curtains can completely change the look of a room, says Kim Massett, REALTOR of Real Estate Teams, LLC. They can add elegance, make a room mod, or show off your creative style. Below are several tips from Massett to keep in mind when shopping for curtains.
Custom color. Are your curtains an accent or bright pop of color? Should they be neutral and blend right into the wall? Are you hoping to add flair and style with a print or pattern? Decide your ideal color before you begin.
Find your fabrics. Thick or thin, opaque or transparent? The fabric of your curtain should be a huge factor in how it will block or transmit light, so choose wisely, and always buy in-store so you can see and feel them for yourself. "And if your curtains are for an especially sunny room, remember they will fade with time," says Massett. It may be best to opt for a lighter color from the get-go.
How will you wash them? Curtains gather dust, debris and mold, and will need a wash several times a year. Keep this in mind when choosing fabrics, as some you can wash yourself, and some demand dry cleaning.
Look and length. The length of your curtains determines their look. Do you want your curtains to cut right at the floor or puddle below? The length can determine whether your style is mod or traditional, according to Massett. And where do you want them to start? If you hang your curtains above the window, you will give the illusion of height - great for rooms with low ceilings. Aim for six to ten inches above the window.
