FREDERICK, MD, Apr 26, 2024—Whether you have family coming for a long weekend or several dozen pals coming for cocktails, the following five tips from Kim Massett, REALTOR of Real Estate Teams, LLC can help you prep your space for receiving them.
Declutter. "This not only makes your space look nicer, but it makes cleaning easier before guests arrive, or if they're staying for an extended period of time," says Massett.
Minimize furniture. If you're having a dinner party, this tip may seem counterintuitive, as your guests will need places to sit. However, if you plan to pack a dozen or more people into your space, minimizing pieces like end tables and consoles and that bulky armchair for one can leave more room for standing and socializing.
Create obvious spaces. "The flow of your home may work perfectly for you and your spouse or your family of four, but more people will change things up," says Massett. Make it clear where your trash and recycling live to encourage guests to tidy up after themselves, and create noticeable areas for sitting and chatting, eating or dancing. If your bathroom isn't obviously accessible, a sign with an arrow can help, too.
Set up DIY stations. Encourage guests to be self sufficient by ensuring everything they need is set out, from food and drinks to ice, cutlery, condiments, and paper or cloth towels for any emergency cleanup situations.
Add thank-you touches. "From mini bottles of wine to small flower arrangements or homemade jam or sweet breads, giving your guests a little something to take with them as they leave will send a little holiday gratitude home with them," suggests Massett.
